Lifeline's three busiest days on record have all been this month

The three busiest days in Lifeline's history have been this month with millions of Australians in lockdown or under restrictions.

The suicide prevention line, which has been operating for 58 years, received 3436 calls on Monday.

In the past 24 hours alone, there have been another 3505 calls.

Lifeline's suicide prevention line is receiving an unprecedented number of phone calls as Australians struggle with their mental health during the pandemic.

Lifeline chair John Brogden said this should serve as a reminder that this is both a physical and mental health pandemic.

"Every time COVID gets worse, our calls grow. There is a silver lining at the same time and that is people are reaching out," Mr Brogden said.

He added that the number of calls has increased by about 40 per cent since 2019.

"We need the community to support volunteers who are working harder than ever," he said.

"These are challenging times, it is okay not to be feeling okay.

"Connecting with others is key. If you, or someone you know are feeling overwhelmed, we encourage you to connect with Lifeline in the way you feel most comfortable.

"Either phone us to speak to a Crisis Supporter on 13 11 14 (24 hours/seven days), or chat to us online at www.lifeline.org.au (7pm – midnight, seven nights)."
