Teenager killed in horror car crash remembered as a 'good kid'

A passenger of a car split in two by a horrific crash in Melbourne's north at the weekend has been remembered as a "good kid taken far too soon".

Christian Del Tondo, 18, died at the scene but the Eltham driver, whose name has not been released publicly, was rushed to hospital and clung to life until yesterday.

The Ford Falcon carrying three teenagers was travelling down Plenty Road in South Morang about 1.10am on Saturday when the driver lost control and struck a power pole.

Friends of Mr Del Tondo took to social media to share their grief.

"You were a good kid and taken way too soon. life just isn't fair, rest easy," one post read.

"Hearts are broken, you will be very missed. Fly high buddy," another person wrote.

Daniel Gvero, a friend of Mr Del Tondo, said he was devastated by the loss.

"He was always polite … a ripper kid. I'm spewing," he said.

"There are a lot of crashes that happen, you don't think it's going to be your mate in the car."

Police said the collision was terrible and tragic.

"This sort of event is totally horrific," Detective Sergeant Darren Williams said.

A third teenager in the car during the deadly crash, from Mernda, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Major collision investigators spent more than eight hours at the scene trying to determine the circumstances of the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dash cam footage.
