Passenger critical after being hit by 4WD while changing a tyre

A 21-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was hit by a 4WD while changing a tyre on a highway in Perth's northern suburbs

Police say the young man was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Outlander which had stopped in the emergency lane between the Cedric Street and Karrinyup Road exits of the Mitchell Freeway about 5am.

The man had just finished swapping a rear tyre and was about to pack up when he was struck by a Toyota Prado.

The horror smash shutdown a number of lanes on the Mitchell Freeway.

Witnesses found him unresponsive and bleeding on the ground.

Emergency crews were called, part of the freeway was closed and the injured man was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.

The 38-year-old Prado driver wasn't hurt. Police say he immediately stopped to help.

Major crash officers spent several hours at the scene gathering evidence.
